How to migrate an email list from Aweber to ConvertKit in a few singles Steps
The migration of An email list from one service to another is not as simple as it seems. You must be very careful with certain factors to make sure you do not lose anything.A few days ago I spoke about this new email marketing service (EMS) called ConvertKit and I told him that I am currently changing my EMS from Aweber to Convert it.
Many of our regular readers asked us to document the whole process so that it is easier for them to do the same. Well, here it is.
Now I am sharing with you the complete process of how to move your entire email list from Aweber to ConvertKit.
I have also made a video that will help you better understand the process.
The video is embedded at the end of this tutorial.
Move the email list from Aweber to ConvertKit:
If you've heard of Aweber but you're still new to ConvertKit, I recommend you read this post to get an idea of ?? how ConvertKit can improve your email marketing.
Here is a summary of the necessary steps:
Export the email list in .csv format in Aweber
Create a new tag with the same last name in ConvertKit
Import the list to ConvertKit and assign the rows
Depending on the size of your email list, it will take some time (potentially hours) to complete the entire process.
First, log in to your Aweber panel and click on "Manage Lists" at the top. Then, click on the list that you want to export.
On the next page, click Subscribers> Manage Subscribers.
You can start right away by exporting your list from here.
But before doing so, I suggest you clean up your email list. Remove those subscribers who have not interacted with your emails in the last months. If you are sending emails regularly, delete people with more than 5 to 6 months of inactivity.
I explained the cleaning process and shared information on why to remove inactive users in the video above. Look at it, as it will help you make the most of your email marketing strategies.
Once you have cleaned your list, click on "Filters" on the left side and select "Currently Subscribed."
This will show your refined list and will only include subscribers who have confirmed their email addresses. At the bottom, you will find the option "Export CSV", click on it and your email list will be exported.
But before you start importing your email list into ConvertKit, you should clean the "unwanted columns". These columns are things like "last track", "date added", "ad tracking" and many other fields that you do not need. So get rid of them.
The only thing left to do is remove that list in Aweber.
IMPORTANT: you must do it only after successfully importing your list into ConvertKit.
This step will complete the Aweber part of this tutorial.
Now, log in to your new ConvertKit panel and follow the steps mentioned below.
Importing the email list to ConvertKit
A common question you will have is: "Should I use segments, forms or labels to import the list?" Well, this is where ConvertKit becomes interesting and many people make mistakes in this part of the transition.
You must use labels to import a list. In this way, it will be easier for you to manage and add marketing automation. I will explain this process in the following guide, but for now, let's finish importing.
Click Subscribers> Create a tag.
Give the label a meaningful name. Something that helps you easily identify your list.Click on "Save."
Then click on "Import subscribers" in the right column, select the tags you just created and drop your .csv file in the placement area.
The last step is to assign the columns to the fields.
Once you have done that, click on "Import Subscribers" at the bottom and the Importer ConvertKit will take care of the rest.
You will receive an email once the import has finished. In my case, it only took about a minute.
That's!
Now you can verify 1 to 2 users by entering "Subscribers" and search 1-2 emails or names that you have exported in your .csv file. This is just to ensure that your list has been migrated correctly. (I know this step is not that important, but honestly, I'm a bit paranoid about the integrity of my data).
This is the same process if you are importing a list of any other email service such as GetResponse, InfusionSoft or any other. One thing you should also do is import your sequence from Aweber to ConvertKit. I will share a guide on "Sequence in ConvertKit" in a future publication.
As I mentioned before, here is the video tutorial:
